This paper summarizes the phytosociological
characteristics of open steppe woods growing on alkaline soil (Galatello-Quercetum
roboris) along the Körös rivers in Southeastern Hungary. These woods
develop from hardwood riparian forests (Fraxino
pannonicae-Ulmetum) through an intermediate closed oak wood (Melico
altissimae-Quercetum roboris) stage, in
response to the gradual desicca tion of the habitat. During this
process, the number and abundance of characteristic species of Fagetalia and
Alnion incanae syntaxa strongly decline, while species characteristic of dry
oak woods (Quercetea pubescentis-petraeae and Aceri tatarici-Quercion)
become more numerous. As the forest canopy opens and the forest floor
becomes drier, the number of Festuco-Bromea elements increases, and
salt-tolerant species (Artemisia pontica,
A. santonicum,
Aster sedifolius,
Juncus gerardii,
Limonium gmelinii
subsp.
hungaricum,
Peucedanum officinale,
Podospermum canum,
Rumex pseudonatronatus) establish
themselves. The association is classified in the suballiance Aceri
tatarici-Quercenion roboris Kevey 2008 within the Aceri tatarici-Quercion
Zólyomi et Jakucs 1957 alliance.
