Key words:
Joseph Hubeny, Michele Tenore, Pál Kitaibel,
Quercus farnetto,
Quercus frainetto,
Quercus hungarica.
The scientific names of
Hungarian oak have appeared in the literature with varying validity over the
last two centuries. This study, based on protologues, thoroughly analysed
all names and descriptions and compared them with the International Code of
Botanical Nomenclature (ICN). It can be stated that the accepted scientific
name of this species is not Quercus
frainetto Ten., because this name was
published in 1815, but Quercus conferta
Kit., which appeared in 1814. Several synonymous names have been published
illegitimately, and many names do not refer to Hungarian oak.
