Key words: edaphic forest vegetation, Gömör–Torna karst, refugia, doline vegetation, zone inversion.

The mountain ridge of Alsó-hegy is part of the Gömör–Torna karst emerging steeply over the Bódva valley and ranging several kilometres along the Hungarian–Slovakian border. Its southern slope is characterized by the mosaic of Quercetum pubescens and xerothermic shrub associations with open and closed rocky grasslands. Although the plateau of the Alsó-hegy over Bódvaszilas (Vecsem-bükk) rarely reaches higher than 500 m a.s.l., its vegetation might even contain montane elements. Within the zone of oak-hornbeam forests (Carici pilosae-Carpinetum), the appearance of beech and ravine forests (Tilio-Acerion) creates a heterogeneous mixture. Moreover, geomorphological karst formations, dolines and sinkholes make the landscape even more diverse. Te small patches of various associations of the dolines appear within the uniform oak-hornbeam forest of the plateau like raisins in a sweetbread. Dolines with different shapes, sizes and surfaces host different woody associations. Edaphic forests, such as Scolopendrio-Fraxinetum, Tilio-Fraxinetum excelsioris and Mercuriali-Tilietum, as well as Carici pilosae Carpinetum or Melittio-Fagetum might appear in these karst formations.
