Priszter, the exceptional literacy and precision

Station, Fruitculture Research Institute, National Agricultural Accepted: 2 October 2017 Key words: cultivated plants, monography, reminiscences Szaniszló Priszter, the outstanding Hungarian botanist of the 20th century is commemorated in this short essay. Particularly, one piece of his immense life work, the contribution to the monograph series “The cultivated plants of Hungary” is discussed. Te series was launched by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 1955 with the aim of providing encyclopaedic treatment for each of the country’s cultivated plants. Of the 180 volumes planned, 72 has been published till now. Szaniszló Priszter was technical editor of the series for 40 years (volumes 1–70), authored or co-authored several volumes, and compiled supplements and indices for the series. His exceptional literacy, high precision and conscientious work greatly contributed to the high standard of the published volumes.
