Forest vegetation on loess, Great Hungarian Plain, syntaxonomy
Upon studying the vegetation of
the Zámoly Basin and its surroundings at the northwestern corner of the
Great Hungarian Plain, I noticed certain stands that seemed to be
transitional between the already known xeric open steppe woodland (Aceri
tatarici-Quercetum roboris) and the mesic oak-hornbeam forest (Corydali
cavae-Carpinetum) in both, structural and habitat characteristics. In
terms of the latter, these stands grow on semi-dry – semi-moist soils, and
seem to be the ecological equivalent of the closed steppe forests on sand (Convallario-Quercetum
roboris) growing also in semi-dry – semi-moist habitats. Species of dry
grasslands (Festuco-Brometea, Festucetalia valesiacae, Festucion
rupicolae, etc.) do not play as an important role in the composition of
the community as they do in the open steppe woodland (Aceri
tatarici-Quercetum roboris). In contrast, species characteristic of dry
oak forests (Quercetea pubescentis-petraeae, Quercetalia cerridis, Aceri
tatarici-Quercion) are common in them. The occurrence of certain rather
mesic species (Querco-Fagetea, Fagetalia, Carpinenion) in the herb
layer indicates the connection to oak-hornbeam forests (Corydali
cavae-Carpinetum). The three forest community types observed in the
Zámoly Basin are substantially different phytosociologically as shown by the
results of traditional and multivariate statistical analyses. The studied
community of closed dry oak forest (Pulmonario mollis-Quercetum roboris
Kevey 2008) is placed in the
Polygonato latifolio-Quercenion roboris
Kevey 2008 suballiance.
